Focus Sessions at the 2013 March Meeting

The DCOMP Program Committee invites you to submit short proposals for Focus Session topics and speakers at the 2013 APS March meeting (Mar 18-22, 2013, Baltimore, MD).

Topics of current interest, both practical and theoretical, will be much appreciated, as will nominations of first-rate speakers who represent a diverse cross section of the physics community.  Focus Sessions include a combination of 1-2 invited talks and contributed talks which have been submitted to the focus topic sorting category.  For additional information, see: http://www.aps.org/meetings/policies/focus.cfm

Proposals for Focus Sessions should be emailed by June 30, 2012 to Tim Germann (tcg@lanl.gov). These should include, at a minimum:
(i) focus session topic title and description (no more than 200 words);
(ii) focus session organizer(s) and contact information; and
(iii) suggestions for 1-2 invited speakers and reasoning (no more than 150 words per speaker), and their contact information.

In addition, the following information may also help the Program Committee:
(iv) references to 2-3 papers for the general topic and references to 2-3 papers for the speaker(s); and/or
(v) suggestion for another APS unit (division or topical group) for cosponsorship, if appropriate.

We look forward to receiving your suggestions!

Announcing 3rd EU-US HPC Summer School

Hi DCOMPers,

This just in ...

Announcing the third EU-U.S. Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences, June 24-28, 2012, Dublin, Ireland
The U.S. National Science Foundation’s Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project and the European Union Seventh Framework Program’s Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) are pleased to announce the third International Summer School on High Performance Computing (HPC) Challenges in Computational Sciences, June 24-28, 2012, in Dublin, Ireland.

After the success of summer schools in Catania, Sicily, in 2010 and in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 2011, the third summer school will take place in Dublin, the capital of the “Green Island.”
The summer school is designed to foster international and multidisciplinary research collaborations with U.S. and European graduate and postdoctoral scholars. Leading American and European computational scientists and HPC technologists will present a variety of topics, including:
An overview of EU and U.S. cyberinfrastructure
HPC challenges by discipline (e.g., bioinformatics, computer science, chemistry, and physics) HPC Programming Proficiencies
Performance Analysis & Profiling
Algorithmic Approaches & Numerical Libraries
Data Intensive Computing
Scientific Visualization

The expense-paid program will benefit advanced scholars from European and U.S. institutions who currently use HPC to conduct research.

Recruitment Opportunities at the APS March and April Meetings

Hi DCOMPers,

For those of you who do not follow news from Crystal Bailey (Education and Careers Program Manager of APS), there are some opportunities for recruitment at the upcoming APS meetings.

At the March Meeting in Boston, there will be a limited number of tables in the Graduate School Fair, for representatives from departments to meet with students, to talk about graduate research opportunities.
There will be a reception for students on Tuesday, February 28 with more time to interact with graduate students. The deadline for the event is January 27 (one week from today).  For more information, and to register your department for this event, please visit:

Secondly,  for the April Meeting in Atlanta, the APS is now accepting applications for Future of Physics Days (FPD) travel awards, for undergraduates presenting the April meeting.  Support is available at the $200 and $1000 levels.  For more information about the award—including a link to the application form—visit:
